Student Projects
Our class had an amazing time along the Western Front, exploring the French countryside for both historical finds and cultural artifacts. We spent ten days in France touring the Battlefields of the Somme and Verdun. On the Somme we met with Remi De Matos-Machado, a French graduate student investigating the disturbance of soil by warfare. Then after travelling to Verdun we would meet with prominent author Christina Holstein, who has been involved in documenting the history of Verdun and preservation of its historical World War One sites.
After returning, each member of the class developed a project that involved our work in France.
Lee Fox - Story Mapping the Western Front, collected and processed fortress data for the area around Verdun, then developed a storymap that overlays this data with the locations visited during the field trip
Tanner Borgen - Digitizing the Battle of Verdun, collected, digitized, and mapped historical battle lines and events for Verdun
Blake Johnson - Digitizing the Battle of the Somme, collected, digitized, and mapped historical battle lines and events for the Somme
Brandon Schleicher - Scarred Landscapes, studied the relationship between munitions deployment and soils, specifically whether warfare is a significant agent in ecological and pedological change.
Zach Orr - The First Air War, researched information regarding the development of aerial warfare in WWI and developed story maps to present his findings.
Joey Robertson - Connections Across Time, researched how animals were used tactically in WWI and presented this information in a story map
Ellen Mattila - Touring Ruined Landscapes, took film and photographs from the trip as well as historical imagery and developed a host of videos that highlight the locations visited and present the work done over the trip.
Provided below is a tour that follows us through our time abroad, so that we can share our experiences with you and show you a little of what we saw. There is no substitute for experiencing history first-hand, but this will give you an idea of the types of places we saw and work that we did. For a full-screen experience, click here.
